Now that we've discussed the planets and the signs through which they pass, it's time to work out how to put all these factors together and work out what time is best for doing what. In this page I'll endeavour to explain how this is done. To do this, you'll need to know what planet is where at what time - you can get a book of these correspondences (called an ephemeris), or you can look them up online (which is easier and cheaper).
Working out the astrologically appropriate time to do a particular working can be a complex operation, but believe me when I say it's not impossible. It involves a little bit of brainpower but it's very do-able, and I'm about to give you a couple of examples to show you how it's done. Remember that you can find all the info I've used to work these examples out in Shadows of Oz.
There are multiple signs and planets, generally, that can be used for the same working - you'll most likely find something will align to help you out. But, if you can't get all your correspondences to line up then you'll need to decide what correspondences are more important for you and find a time in your magickal window in which your magick will work best. Things may not always be perfect, but they should align as well as possible - as long as you don't do your working in a time when a powerful influence will be working against you, you'll be okay. You should also be aware that the more correspondences you line up, the more focused your magick becomes - you want to be sure you're using the right correspondences and focusing on the right things.
Scenario #1 - Looking for love
Love is not an easy thing to find, so you'll probably need all the help you can get. Remember when doing love magick that you can only ask the Universe to nudge the right person in your direction, you can't make a specific person fall in love with you. These are two very different things so make sure you're going about it the right way.
Pick a sign: You'll need to work out what sign/s of the zodiac is/are most appropriate for the working. In this case, I could use Taurus (associated with love matters and new beginnings), Libra (associated with love) or Capricorn (associated with commitment).
Pick a planet: Love is an important thing - if you need to wait a while until the right planet is in the right sign, then you should do it. Just like there are many signs you can use, there are also many planets: for example, Venus (named after the Roman Goddess of love), or if you wanted a passionate relationship, you could use the Sun (which possesses the sexual energy of the God). Some planets have different and undesirable energies when they're in retrograde, so be aware of that. If all else fails, the Moon travels through all the signs of the zodiac in a month - you could use the Moon as your 'planet' instead of one of the 'true' planets - it has the same level of 'power' as a planet like Mars/Jupiter, etc.
Pick a time: Find a time when an appropriate planet is an an appropriate sign - you'll probably also be able to find a time when the Moon phase is right, too, considering how many suitable planets and signs are around. For the purposes of this example, we'll say that at the time I wanted to do this ritual that Venus (planet of love) was in Taurus (associated with your love life), and that the Moon was new (a time to work for new projects and growth) or full (a time for any magick). If you wanted to get into real detail you could also pick specific a time of the day to do your magick. I would pick the morning, as it is a new beginning much like the start of a new relationship is new.
Scenario #2 - Preparing for a job interview
Job interviews are a vital part of getting that job you're after - so, a little magick to help you not to make a dipstick of yourself while you're in one can only be a good thing.
Pick a sign: In this case, I could use Virgo (associated with employment), Aries (new beginnings), Taurus (also new beginnings), Leo (for leadership, if you are interviewing for management), and so on and so forth. There are a few signs that can be used for the same workings, remember.
Pick a planet: Because a job interview can be a pretty short-notice thing, you need a certain amount of good fortune in what planets are in which signs. Just like there are many signs you can use, there are also many planets: for example, Mercury (planet of communication) or Mars (planet of courage and action) or perhaps Uranus (planet of change), and so and so forth. Remember that some planets have undesirable energies when they're in retrograde. If all else fails, the Moon travels through all the signs of the zodiac in a month, so chances are you'll be able to do your ritual when the Moon is in an appropriate sign and still get it done before your interview.
Pick a time: Remember, pick a time when the right planet is in the right sign. For the purposes of this example, we'll say that at the time I wanted to do this ritual that Mercury (planet of communication) was in Virgo (associated with employment), and that the Moon was new (a time to work for new projects and growth) or full (a time for any kind of magick). If you wanted to get really detailed, you could also pick an auspicious time of the day to do your ritual - for this working I would choose the morning (again), as a job interview can be the start of something new like the morning is the beginning of the day.
