Stones - Shadows of Oz

This is my 'database' of stones/crystals/gems or whatever you want to call them - for continuity, I'm going to call them stones. Here you'll find the properties associated with some stones that may help you in writing rituals and spells, and also a guide to buying and storing your stones. It's useful to know this stuff so you can add another string to your magickal bow and perhaps get a little more energy flowing through your magick.

Using Stones

Note that I've put the stones in alphabetical order using the way their names are said - for instance, 'smokey quartz' is written that way and filed under S, not written as 'quartz, smokey' and put under Q.

It's all well and good to know the properties of stones, but making use of the energies associated with them is something different. Below you'll find a few suggestions to get the energy of your stones into your life and your magick. These are certainly not all the ways it is possible to draw on the energies of stones, but it's a start.

Acquiring them

You might get your stone in many different ways - you could find it walking up the street, or on the beach or (more mundanely) in the local metaphysical shop. If you're buying stones, choose one that appeals to you. It may not be the most perfect shape or the most flawless, but if it's going to help you at all you need to actually like it and relate to it. Even if you have to spend a few dollars more - it's worth it in the long run.

Cleansing them

When you get your stone/s home, you need to 'wash away' any negativity. You can do this by literally washing your stones in consecrated water (or even just salted water), and by leaving them in the light of the sun and the Moon. When I first acquire a stone, I do all these things - wash them in my consecrated water then leave them in the window for 24 hours. If I've used a stone for something, I always do a quick consecration before I put it back on my altar. You want to cleanse your stones periodically, even if you haven't used them - they tend to gather dust (both literally and energy-wise) - washing stones in consecrated water of leaving stones in moonlight and sunlight is also a good way to do this.

Storing them

Generally, stones are stored in a cool, dim place. Some people like to keep them in a special bag or box, but I prefer to leave the majority of my collection on my altar - it involves a lot of cleaning, but I like to see them whenever I walk past. Don't leave them in full sun or over the stove and you should be fine.

Using them

Stones are not just ritual tools. You can, for example, carry a tiger eye around with you to draw on its truth-revealing energy. I have a lovely pentacle necklace with a faceted tiger eye in it that I never take off - not because it helps reveal the truth, just because it's my favourite stone. People even soak stones with desirable properties in oil/distilled water for a few days and then use this essence to anoint candles or to drink with tea. If you intend to ingest the liquid essence of a stone, make absolutely sure that stone is non-toxic (i.e. - not galena, which is mostly lead) - that information is not contained in this site. Remember that stones are useful in everyday life as well as in ritual.

Before you use a stone in your magick, make sure it's consistent with the intent you are working on. Check the properties of your stones and pick stones with the right energies.

When you have the correct stone/s, there are a few ways you can daw their energy into your magick:

Keeping an appropriate stone on you to help focus your energy on your intent (perhaps in a pocket or in jewellery);

Surrounding any candles involved in your magick with stones appropriate for your intent - as the flame flickers and reflects off the surfaces of the stones, it draws on the energies of your stones and adds that to your cone of power;

Using the liquid essence of a stone to anoint candles;

Charging an appropriate stone for use as a talisman/amulet; or

Putting a stone with the correct energies inside a poppet when doing poppet magick.
